  7.     Bret Easton Ellis, author of Less Than Zero and a leader of
  8. Manhattan's literary brat pack, has a novel due out next
  9. February that is already causing controversy. Staff members at
  10. Simon & Schuster who have read the manuscript, titled American
  11. Psycho, say it chronicles a young Wall Street banker who is
  12. involved in sexual perversities, murders, mutilations and
  13. diverse other grotesqueries and degradations. Robert Asahina,
  14. Ellis' editor, allows, "It is a book that can be at times
  15. upsetting to read." Some are so upset that they have balked at
  16. working on the novel. But Ellis has his defenders, one of whom
  17. calls the work, a tad redundantly, a bete noire Bonfire of the
  18. Vanities.
